Q   I have a brand new drive. How do I set it up in Windows?

o    Internal Products: Insert the drive into your Icy Dock product. Right click on My Computer and left click on “Manage”. Next, go to the pane on the left side of the window, and select “Disk Management”. Since the drive is brand new, it may need to be initialized. A wizard should pop up to take you through the steps. Next, the drive will be available and should read as “xx GB” and should be listed as an unallocated partition. Right click the partition and select “Format”. This will take you into another wizard. Select the size of the partition in MB, or leave it to use the maximum amount available. Click next. Choose the drive letter and again click next. Finally, choose NTFS as the file system, default for the block size, and check the quick format box. Click next to review the settings, and finally click finish to begin formatting the drive.

o    External Products: Before connecting your product to the external interface, make sure you have all interface drives updated (ie: USB 3.0 drivers, eSATA, Firewire). Once the drive is installed in the enclosure, connect the interface (USB, eSATA, or Firewire) and turn the power on. You may see messages pop up in the notifications area of your toolbar, and this is normal. Windows may need to install device drivers and this should take a minute at most. Once it says the device is ready to use, follow the same instructions for setting up a drive with an internal product.

Q   How do I format my drive using Windows?

o    Right click on My Computer and left click on “Manage”. Next, go to the pane on the left side of the window, and select “Disk Management”. The drive will be available and should read as “xx GB” and should be listed as an unallocated partition. Right click the partition and select “Format”. This will take you into another wizard. Finally, choose NTFS as the file system, default for the block size, and check the quick format box. Click next to review the settings, and finally click finish to begin formatting the drive.

Q   Are there any drivers required to use my Icy Dock enclosure in Windows?

o    Only older versions of Windows may require drivers, such as Windows 95.

Q   My drive is not recognized in My Computer. Is my enclosure defective?

o    First, check in Disk Management to see if the drive is seen by the operating system. Right click on My Computer and select “Manage”. In the left pane, left click on Disk Management to see if the drive is there. If the drive is in Disk Management, see that it has a drive letter. If it does not, right click the drive and select the option to give the volume drive a letter. If the volume shows up as unallocated, right click and select format. See above for instructions on how to format a drive.

Q   I am getting a “Delayed Write Failure” error in Windows XP. How can I fix this?

Q   How do I safely remove my Icy Dock external enclosure?

o    In the Taskbar notification area, an icon with a green arrow will be there when a device is connected. To eject a device, left click the icon once and select the drive letter to be ejected.

o    Open My Computer and right click on the device to be ejected. A menu will pop up and select the “Eject” option.

Q   How can I change the sleep settings for my Icy Dock external enclosure?

o    Open My Computer and right click on the device. Select properties and click on the “Power” tab. Here you can disable or enable the sleep function of the drive.

Q   Do Icy Dock products come with any backup software for Windows?

o    Only the Icy Dock MB668U-1SB and MB668US-1SB come with back up software to use with the One Touch Backup button. The software comes on a mini-disc in the product packaging and only works on Windows.

Q   How can I use a drive formatted for Mac OSX in Windows?

o    If the drive is not formatted in FAT32 (a file system with read and write permissions for both Windows and Mac) then third party software is required to view a Mac volume. MacDrive is developed by MediaFour and is available for purchase through the MediaFour website: http://www.mediafour.com/products/macdrive/

Q   I have a Windows based computer. How can I use an Icy Dock eSATA external enclosure with my system?

o    There are three methods for using eSATA:

§  The system may already have an eSATA port built into the design.

§  Using an eSATA bracket in which an internal SATA port from the motherboard or controller card is converted to an eSATA connection.

§  Using an eSATA add-on card via PCI Express, PCI-X, or PCI slot on the motherboard of the system, or an eSATA ExpressCard on a laptop.

Q   I have a Windows based computer. How can I use an Icy Dock external enclosure which requires an eSATA port multiplier?

o    Some motherboards may support SATA or eSATA port multiplication out of the box, however most do not. The standard method is to use an eSATA PCI Express card which supports port multiplication. Some cards may also have a RAID feature included.
